Year 8 enjoyed a visit from volunteers speaking on behalf
of the charity Animal Aid which is an organisation that campaigns for animal
rights. Students were taken out of their
comfort zone and were challenged about the testing on animals for medical purposes,
factory farming of animals, horse racing and ways in which they can make a
difference. The day linked with RE work
on the creation story and how God made a covenant with humanity, asking us to
be good stewards of the earth.
One activity that proved popular was putting together a
power point presentation of the ‘story of de-creation’, explaining how we have
broken our promise to God and have indeed spoiled our beautiful planet. Students said that were shocked to learn
about the extent of animal cruelty and the pain they would suffer during
experiments and intense farming methods.
Some said that they had changed their opinion about cruelty to animals
and will now look for the ‘leaping bunny’ logo that shows products have not been
tested on animals. A good result! One of the fun activities of the day was
guessing the animal related songs, from Elvis’ ‘Hound Dog’ to Katy Perry’s
‘Roarrr’. There was also drama and
discussion based around moral decisions and how to campaign against the unfair
treatment of animals.
Many thanks to our visitors from Animal Aid, RE Staff and
most of all our Year 8 students for making this a day of fun and learning.
